It's not me that's confusing you, but BT. They have (deliberately IMO)
blurred the distinction between the telecoms carrier used to connect ot
the USP and the ISP. With dialup, people think it's normal to use BT
phone lines to connect to any ISP, think of ADSL the same way. BT
provide the link between your wall socket and your ISP. It's the ISP who
provide the link from there to the rest of the World. As with dialup,
that ISP can vary from excellent to rubbish.

> what ISP`s can anyone recommend as good ones for ADSL?

Claranet, Zen and Nildram have very good reputations. Easynet and A&A
are also highly recommended, but rather more expensive. I use Claranet
myself, ther service is reliable (current connect time 507 hr, 7 min, 56
sec) and their support is good. I rang them today to change my
user/account name. They changed it immediately and at no charge.

> i`m in the manchester area if that helps?

Not really. All ISPs provide the service nationally.

they aren't cross-subsidised. Not that BTO are cross-subsidised, of
course not, BT would never do anything like that and Oftel would never
let them get away with it. Oh No!.

If you can get NTL cablemodem, it's around half the price. not as good
but better value for money if total reliability isn't too important to
you.

Cheers
